Teaching myself a new language?

I'm trying to teach myself Scots Gaelic, but I can't seem to get past the first chapter in my book. What can I do to help myself remember and understand what it is I'm saying over and over. Am I having this problem because I'm studying by myself, or is just poor study habits? I don't remember my French cl in high school being this difficult.
